How to Plan a Stress-Free Elopement: A Photographer’s Guide

There is something incredibly special about an elopement. It’s not about doing less, it’s about making space for more. More connection, more intentional moments, more time focused on the person you’re promising forever to. It could be exchanging vows on a mountain overlook, standing beside a waterfall, or celebrating in a quiet cabin surrounded by nature, elopements create room for couples to slow down and actually experience the moment in a much more intimate way.

The beauty of an elopement is that it can feel effortless—but behind every meaningful moment is thoughtful preparation, a little flexibility, and a willingness to adapt when changes arise. Here are some tips to create a day that feels relaxed, intentional, and unforgettable.

Start With What Matters Most

Before choosing a location, picking outfits, or creating a timeline, start with one simple question: what do you want your wedding day to feel like? This is one of my favorite parts of helping couples plan their elopement because there is no single right way to do it. Maybe you want a quiet morning together before saying your vows. Maybe you want to hike somewhere beautiful and celebrate with just the two of you. Or maybe you want to include your closest family members and turn your elopement into a meaningful gathering. Your day should reflect your relationship—not someone else’s expectations. The best elopements are the ones where couples feel completely present because they created a day centered around what they love.

Choosing the Perfect Location

After determining the type of experience you want to have, location comes next. As a photographer, it’s easy to say “Pick somewhere with great lighting! Or beautiful flowers!”. But sometimes, the most beautiful moments happen in places that aren't the most obvious. Some key factors in choosing your location should be: travel time and accessibility, privacy and comfort, and above all, the meaning this location will bring to the two of you. A quiet trail, a favorite overlook, or a place where you can take a deep breath and say, “We’re really doing this,” can become more meaningful than the most popular spot on Instagram. Tennessee offers so many beautiful backdrops, but the most important consideration is finding a place that feels like you.

Build a Timeline That Allows You to Breathe

One of the biggest benefits of an elopement is the ability to slow down, you don’t have to rush from one event to the next. A relaxed elopement timeline might include:

  • A slow morning getting ready

  • A first look somewhere meaningful

  • Time to explore and take in the scenery

  • A private vow exchange

  • Celebrating with a picnic, dinner, or champagne toast

  • Sunset portraits together

The goal isn’t to fill every minute. The goal is to create moments where you can actually be present.

Trust Your Photographer to Help With the Details

Many couples worry about the logistics of an elopement, that’s where your photographer becomes more than someone holding a camera. My role is to help guide you through the experience. I’ll help with planning, timelines, locations, lighting, and all the little details that make your day feel seamless. And when the day arrives, I’m there to help you relax and focus on each other. Because planning an elopement often means bringing together a lot of moving pieces, many photographers chose to become ordained ministers This allows them to help couples take one more thing off their plate by leading their ceremony if they choose. Having your photographer and officiant as one person also allows the day to feel more relaxed and personal.

The Unplanned Is Part of the Story

One thing I’ve learned from photographing couples is that the moments you don’t plan are often the ones you treasure most. Some of my favorite images come from things we couldn’t have predicted—the laughter when something goes wrong, the way you hold onto each other when the rain starts falling, or the quiet pause after realizing you’re officially married. Perfect doesn’t mean everything went exactly according to plan, perfect means the day felt like you.

Less Stress, More Intention

One of the biggest reasons couples choose an elopement is the freedom it brings. Traditional weddings can be incredibly meaningful, but they can also come with a long list of decisions, expectations, and details to manage. From coordinating multiple vendors to creating a guest list and planning a full-day schedule, it’s easy for the focus to shift from celebrating your marriage to managing the logistics of the event. An elopement gives you the opportunity to simplify.

Instead of spending months planning a day centered around everyone else, you can create an experience focused on the two of you. You can spend your time and energy on the moments that matter most: your vows, your location, your experience, and the start of your life together. Elopements are often more budget-friendly than traditional weddings as well. With fewer guests and fewer moving parts, many couples are able to invest in the things that are most meaningful to them. But the value of an elopement isn’t just about spending less, it’s about being intentional with how you spend your time, energy, and resources.

At the end of the day, your wedding day is about one thing: starting your life together. An elopement allows you to do that in a way that feels relaxed, personal, and completely true to your story.
